Methods of Centering Awareness

There are countless methods and activities that help centering awareness, but only a few were designed on purpose to do so.

These methods can be categorized into two main groups depending on what way they alter our perception of space and time:

  1. By changing the external environment

  2. By changing the internal environment

Changing the external environment is faster, requires less knowledge, but may be more costly and leaves the practitioner dependent on external aids.

Changing the internal environment is slower, requires learning new skills and determination to practice and learn, but gives freedom.

1. Changing the external environment

A perfect example would be Floatation or REST (Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy), where you are floating weightlessly in a a pool of ultra-saturated warm salt water giving you a feeling of zero gravity and tranquility.

2. Changing the internal environment

This category contains traditional practices such as Yoga and Taijiquan, or other systems that work with the body and breath to center awareness.

Based on the 'Foundations' material, the following topics will be discussed:

  1. What is relaxation?

  2. What is listening?

  3. The connection of listening and relaxation

  4. Levels of relaxation

  5. Focus and Awareness

  6. Stretching and pandiculation
